We are living through a very competitive time in orthopedics in india.
Orthopedics is no more an end branchas it used to be. It seems there are more candidates than the available Job post after completing postgraduation.
Earlier the orthopedics started as a specialised branch of surgery around 40 to 50 years ago. It converted to a separate postgraduation. With time the orthopaedics has also started subspecialisation into various niches.
- Trauma
- Upper limb and Hand
- Spine
- Pelviacetabular surgery
- Oncological orthopedic surgery
- Sports injury
- Arthroplasty
- Pediatric orthopedics
Various fellowships and degrees are available throughout india and abroad which range from
3 month to 3 years
There is a sheer change from doing Senior residency for 1 to 3 years to joining a fellowship to specialise after postgraduation.
This has led to hampering of the basic surgical knowledge. the surgical training has also deteriorated in past few years.
It remains a personal choice to expertise basics in Senior residency or to specialise in a branch.
It appears that the choice depends on cuurent mental status and condition of the candidate. Understanding that post PG surgical experience is crucial to minimise complications and improve outcome later.
